We had some things to tackle
1) Before Covid, mass tourism overwhelmed Amsterdam’s city centre and its citizens. So our fellow Amsterdammers became less tolerant towards tourists.
2) We live in an increasingly disconnected and divided world. Loneliness soared in Amsterdam and around the world, especially during the pandemic.
3) Global travel titans like Viator that measure success by profit alone dominate the internet. The result? The highest bidder wins. Independent local businesses get left behind.
So we decided…
To create an experience where locals and travellers can connect, get inspired and thrive. A win-win for everyone.
In 2018, we started Who is Amsterdam Tours to do just that — an alternative experience that let travellers connect with locals who embody Amsterdam’s famous topics.
Think a sex worker, a coffeeshop owner, bike mechanic, etc.
Many of our guests called it a “once in a lifetime” experience.
All our reviews are 5 stars. Locals got to profit directly. Lonely Planet’ name us the “Best of Amsterdam 2019”. In 2020, we won an AirBnB Experiences’ award for “Best Connection” and TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice.
So we decided…

It was time to move beyond our own tours and transform into Who is Amsterdam: a local travel platform that champions the best travel experiences in our city. The kind that runs their businesses with heart, and with our city, our fellow Amsterdammers and travellers in mind. Through partnering up with like-minded local independent businesses, we’re here to use tourism as a force for good.
And there it was.
