Who is Tomas?
From an early age, born-and-raised Amsterdammer, Tomas, had a thing for water and sailing. From cleaning pedal boats during his secondary school years to sailing the Amsterdam canals alongside his studies. The freedom of sailing and sociability was his fuel. In 2001, Tomas bought his first boat, ‘t Smidtje, and Smidtje Luxury Cruises was born.

From start to finish, they were helpful in the extreme, with ideas for food, where to go, etc.The boat picked us up from our hotel, before taking us on a two hour trip around the canals and river of Amsterdam. The young lady who served the food and drink was very pleasant and helpful, as was the captain who kindly went out of his way to pick two of our parties up who went to the wrong place! There are bigger companies in Amsterdam to go on boat trips with, but I doubt there are better ones.”

Sustainability is a buzzword these days. But to Tomas, it’s not just business, it’s personal. During the lockdown of 2021, I (Alexandra) took up a sustainable tourism project with the city of Amsterdam and had the pleasure of interviewing Tomas. From the get-go, he was open, warm and passionate. I loved the way he views sustainability as a way to give back to the city he was born in and loves. His canal cruise companies were among the first to go green on the waters of Amsterdam and Haarlem. His enthusiasm and collaborative spirit in working with like-minded businesses are infectious.
