Curious about our sex industry and red lights? At Bon Ton, you have the green light to explore.
Meet Machiel, the co-owner of Tour de BonTon, Amsterdam’s most exclusive sex and strip club. Get behind the curtains and open your mind.
Who is Tour de BonTon
Hailing from the south of the Netherlands, Machiel’s fascination with people, culture, stories and ideas led him to study museology in Amsterdam. After years of working at museums, he started working at the Jewish Cultural Quarters, where he kicked off his career in tourism.
In 2019, Machiel got the opportunity to work on Tour de BonTon with Lotte, the co-owner of BonTon. This unique opportunity to break down stigma and open minds excited and challenged him. So when he was invited to be the co-owner of Tour de BonTon, it was a no-brainer. Why? Because to him, it’s not just a tourist attraction. It’s a chance to create conversations and help the public understand sex work and workers beyond the lens of the media — just like it did to him. And he warmly invites you to join the ride.

Wanna Know More?
“This tour is a must for anyone who wants to understand the sex industry and what motivates sex workers. The facilities are interesting, but the main attraction is the ability to have a candid group conversation with a former sex worker. I was fascinated to hear a first-hand account of how the work leveraged young women into business opportunities outside the sex trade.”

“We booked the tour and it was riveting! Angel, our host, was very upfront with information, the history of sex work in Amsterdam and gave her own background story. She was very accommodating and to see the rooms where the sex workers do their business and to get a first-hand look behind the curtains was extremely interesting. 🙂 Definitely book the tour if you’re in Amsterdam!”

“This tour was super interesting. We were going to do the sex worker museum but was recommended to do the Bon Ton tour in a working sex club and I’m really glad we went! Our tour guide was Angel and honestly I could have listened to her story all day – and that’s my only complaint is that an hour just isn’t enough!! She was welcoming, friendly, and shared her experiences openly. When looking at the rooms, there are QR codes to give more information which was really useful. I would absolutely recommend this tour.”

Sometimes you meet people in your life who resonate with your ideas, values and beliefs. Machiel is one of them. We were first introduced to him at an informal launch event of Who is Amsterdam Tours in 2018. From the get-go, he was open, curious and enthusiastic about what we do and stand for. When we discovered that he had become the co-owner of Tour de BonTon, we knew we wanted to partner up with him. After all, we share the same view on tourism in Amsterdam. Instead of avoiding controversial topics like the red light district, we believe in creating safe spaces to foster open conversations and innovative solutions to help travellers expand their worldviews. That’s exactly what Tour de BonTon does. This is why we’re proud to have Machiel onboard.
