Picture this: you land in Amsterdam, stretch your legs, and think, “Okay… where do I even start?”
This tour is your answer.
It’s a lively 2-hour walk where stories, humour, and actual local life do all the heavy lifting. No dusty lectures. No “on your left, another boring building.” Just the stuff that makes Amsterdam click — the culture, the quirks, the hidden gems, the “aha, now I get it” moments.
You finish feeling oriented, inspired, and slightly smug — like you unlocked the city’s cheat codes.
Perfect for first-timers. Or honestly, anyone who wants the city to make sense without a week of Googling.
Our tours regularly sell out year-round. To get your preferred dates and to avoid
missing out, we highly recommend booking as soon as possible.
Imagine this: you’re standing in a narrow Amsterdam alley that smells faintly of stroopwafels (yes, that is a real smell), squinting at canal houses that lean like they’ve had one too many beers. A bike whizzes past with that classic ding-ding, and suddenly the city feels… alive.
Your feet are on a bridge older than most countries’ entire political systems, your guide is telling a story that somehow makes 400 years ago sound weirdly relatable, and you catch yourself thinking, “Wait, why is this actually fun?”
And that’s the whole vibe.
History sneaks up disguised as humour.
Culture shows up as “oh wow, I never knew that.”
Orientation happens without you noticing — like someone quietly turned on the city’s subtitles.
You might even grab a slice of apple pie later because your guide casually drops the name of their favourite café and now you have to go.
By the end, you won’t just have seen Amsterdam — you’ll have felt it in your legs, tasted it in your mouth, and stored it in the part of your brain reserved for “places I secretly want to move to.”
You walk away grinning like a local on their bike, minus the existential fear of actually riding one.
We kick things off at Dam Square — the city’s living room for the past 800 years. With the Royal Palace on one side, the New Church on the other, and the National Monument watching over it all, this is where Amsterdam’s story began. You’ll even hear the bizarre tale of the city’s very first “rabbit king” and find out why the Dutch are the most practical people on earth — all while standing right where Amsterdam’s very first settlers did.
Welcome to the UNESCO canal belt — the world’s prettiest plumbing system. Surrounded by the famously wonky Dancing Houses, you’ll hear how water shaped Amsterdam like no other city on earth. From clever merchants to downright genius engineers, this is where you realize: without canals, there would be no Amsterdam.

In Amsterdam, bikes aren’t just transport — they’re a way of life. You’ll find out why there are more bikes than people here and how many end up fished out of the canals every year (spoiler: it’s a lot). And then there’s the moving story of the Flower Bike Man — the local legend who covered his bike in blooms to heal from heartbreak, and in doing so spread joy all over the city.

Crooked canal houses, postcard canals, hidden corners you’d never find alone — this tour is packed with photo ops. Get your camera ready, because you’ll head home with the kind of shots that make your friends say, “Wait… why didn’t we go with you?”

Our team isn’t made up of guides who recite dates — they’re storytellers who live and breathe Amsterdam. With passion, humor, and heart, they’ll sweep you into tales that make centuries-old history feel alive, so you don’t just see the city… you experience it.

Ever wondered why UNICEF rated the Dutch kids the happiest in the world? From strong social values to a daily dose of gezelligheid (that untranslatable Dutch coziness), you’ll discover the secret sauce behind Dutch balance. Warning: you might just start rethinking your own life back home.
We could tell you how great our tours are—but our guests do it better. Here are their video testimonials after joining our tours.
Local guides who actually live here — real stories, real opinions, zero scripts.
Small groups, genuine connection, and reviews from people who don’t hand out praise lightly.
No dry history lectures — just why it mattered to real people then and why it still matters now.
From first message to last canal goodbye, you deal with humans who help you figure it out.

There’s no better way to kick off your trip. This Amsterdam walking tour gives you the full scoop – from Amsterdam’s rich history and quirky present to practical tips and local secrets (like why the Dutch don’t close their curtains).
You’ll learn how to navigate the city, understand a bit of Dutch mentality, and feel way more comfortable and connected for the rest of your stay.
Pro tip: Do the tour at the beginning of your trip—it’ll make everything else way more enjoyable.
Yes — our tours run rain or shine, because a bit of Dutch drizzle is part of the real Amsterdam experience.
We recommend checking the weather forecast before your tour and bringing both a rain jacket and an umbrella if rain is expected. Of course, if there’s a storm and it’s not safe to walk, we’ll cancel the tour and you’ll receive a full refund.
Yes — this tour was specifically designed for first-time visitors
In just two hours, you’ll understand how Amsterdam works: its history, culture, bike life, canals, and the famous Dutch mentality.
Many guests tell us the tour helped them feel oriented immediately, making the rest of their trip easier and more enjoyable.
We won’t argue — Amsterdam is gorgeous from the water, and a boat tour is a wonderful way to enjoy the canals.
But if you’re short on time, we recommend starting with a walking tour. On foot, you don’t just admire the city as it glides past — you stop, explore, and really learn about Amsterdam. Then, hop on a boat afterwards to relax and take it all in from the water. It’s the perfect combo.
This is a walking tour, so there aren’t really sitting possibilities along the way. If you need to rest, just let your guide know — some stops are near benches, but only a few people can sit if they happen to be free. Most of the time, though, we’ll be on our feet exploring the city together.
We will make around 3500 steps in total.
We recommend:
That’s really all you need.
Absolutely — many of our guests join solo.
Because the group size is small (maximum 15 guests), it’s easy to chat with other travellers and your guide. Many people tell us they end up meeting new friends during the tour.
All ages are welcome! Just keep in mind that at our third stop we talk about the Red Light District and cannabis — always in an educational and respectful way.
From experience, most parents are comfortable letting their kids listen, while others choose to step aside with them for a few minutes and rejoin afterwards. Whatever works best for you works for us.
If you are coming with your family then we highly recommend checking out our Family Walking Tour. Is especially designed for families to connect and have a wonderful time while learning about Amsterdam
Yes — we highly recommend it.
This tour gives you the big picture of Amsterdam, which makes visits to places like the Anne Frank House, Rijksmuseum, or canal cruises much more meaningful afterwards.
You’ll understand the city before diving deeper.
We completely understand — before booking, you want to know exactly what you’ll experience. So here it is: the Hello Amsterdam Walking Tour, stop by stop. Each place tells a piece of the city’s story, with history, humor, and even a game or two along the way.
Stop 1 – Dam Square: A warm welcome in the city’s birthplace. Surrounded by the Royal Palace, the Nieuwe Kerk, and the National Monument, your guide sets the stage for the adventure ahead. This square is Amsterdam’s living room — the place where trade, tolerance, and transformation have shaped the city for centuries.
Stop 2 – Beurs van Berlage: Where capitalism wore clogs. At the world’s first stock exchange, you’ll discover how trade and finance shaped a city that still thrives on innovation. A story of ambition, risk, and global reach — right here in the brick building that changed everything.
Stop 3 – Damrak: On the edge of the Red Light District, we lighten things up with a game of true or false. From coffeeshops to Dutch tolerance and all the quirks in between, you’ll
test what you think you know about Amsterdam. Don’t worry — your guide’s got plenty of witty comebacks if you guess wrong.
Stop 4 – Haarlemmersluis: Bikes, bikes, bikes. Why are there more bicycles than people, and what does that say about Dutch life? Standing at one of the busiest cycling bridges in town, you’ll learn how two wheels became a symbol of equality, freedom, and the Dutch way of getting things done.
Stop 5 – Singel Canal: The Dancing Houses. Snap your photos and hear the slightly tipsy story behind these crooked canal houses. They may lean and wobble, but they reveal the clever engineering (and the merchant pride) that built Amsterdam’s iconic skyline.
Stop 6 – Torensluis: The postcard canals… and the history they hide. Beneath the charming arches and UNESCO beauty are stories of colonial trade, power, and the people who made Amsterdam’s Golden Age possible. It’s a place where picture-perfect views meet the city’s more complex truths.
Stop 7 – Westerkerk / Anne Frank House / Homomonument: Freedom, resilience, diversity. Our walk ends here, where history, memory, and modern identity converge. From Anne Frank’s story to the world’s first Gay Monument, this stop ties Amsterdam’s past and present together — and leaves you with insider tips to fuel the rest of your adventure.
Amsterdam doesn’t have many public toilets in the historic city centre, so we recommend using the restroom before the tour starts.
If you need to go during the tour, that’s absolutely possible. There are always cafés and restaurants nearby where you can use the toilet. Just let your guide know.
During one of the stops, your guide will point you to the nearest option and tell you how much time you have. Most stops last about 5–10 minutes, which is usually enough time to quickly go and rejoin the group while the guide continues the story.
Yes — Amsterdam is actually one of the most walkable cities in Europe. The historic city centre is compact, with canals, narrow streets, and major landmarks located close to each other. Many of the most famous sights — like Dam Square, the Royal Palace, the Anne Frank House, and the Jordaan neighborhood — are within comfortable walking distance.
Walking is also one of the best ways to experience the city. Amsterdam is full of hidden courtyards, small alleyways, local cafés, and historic canal houses that you might easily miss if you only travel by tram, bike, or boat.
Most visitors find that they can explore a large part of the city simply by walking, especially in the canal belt and historic centre.
That’s also why walking tours are so popular in Amsterdam — they allow you to slow down, discover hidden places, and understand the stories behind the city while exploring it on foot.
Amsterdam has several free walking tours, and they can be a fun way to explore the city. Most operate on a tip-based model, meaning you don’t pay upfront but are expected to tip the guide at the end.
That model gives you flexibility to decide what the tour was worth to you. At the same time, some travelers prefer knowing the price in advance rather than wondering at the end how much they should tip or what is considered appropriate.
The Hello Amsterdam Walking Tour works differently. The price is clear upfront, so you can simply relax and enjoy the experience without thinking about payment during the tour. Our tour is designed more like a boutique experience rather than a mainstream tour.
Our groups are intentionally small — never more than 15 guests per guide. This allows for a much higher level of personal attention, more interaction with the guide, and plenty of time to ask questions along the way.
In fact, the City of Amsterdam selected this tour as one of the official introductory walking tours, recognizing the quality of the storytelling and the way it helps visitors truly understand the city.
We also try to make the experience as guest-friendly as possible. If you’re running late, you can call us and still join the group, even if the tour has already started — because we know travel plans don’t always go perfectly.
At the end of the tour, we also share a curated list of fantastic restaurants, cafés, and local spots, so you can continue exploring Amsterdam like a local.
And finally, we stand fully behind the experience. If we don’t wow you — if it’s not a five star experience — you’ll get your money back, 100%. No questions asked. Our goal is simple: to give you a personal, high-quality introduction to Amsterdam that helps you get the most out of your time in the city.
Our meeting point is right in the heart of Amsterdam at Dam Square, so you’ll find plenty of great places to eat nearby.
