Yum!!!

Tjin’s Toko and Rudy’s Stroopwafel were incredible! I am truly heartbroken there are no Surinamese restaurants in Toronto.

FAQ Self-Guided Food Tour de Pijp

This is a self-guided food tour. Food is not included. Once you’ve booked your time slot, you’ll get a booking confirmation email with a link to download your PDF guide. The guide contains all the addresses with clickable Google Maps links. Simply flash your individual PDF guide on your phone to get exclusive deals and discounts at 7 locations.

The food is not included. This is a PDF guide that takes you to 6 – 8 family-owned businesses, filled with the stories behind the establishments and the food you’ll taste. Order according to our recommendation at each stop and pay as you go. What’s more? Tidbits about the neighbourhood and the Albert Cuyp Market, as well as restaurant recommendations for the rest of your stay.

After some cool discounts and deals, the total bill is around 25 EUR. For real.

If you must know, it’s a spread of Amsterdam’s best traditional Dutch, Surinamese, Japanese and Israeli street foods. Starting with the nation’s favourite croquette (deep-fried ragout), followed by Suriname’s national celebratory dish, herring and kibbeling (fried cod), Amsterdam’s best poffertjes (baby pancakes) and stroopwafel (syrup waffle), delicious Japanese takoyaki balls, Israeli smoked meats and twice-fried fries with a special Dutch sauce combo. Come hungry.

Great question! Even though you’re setting off on the tour on your own, we use time slots to keep things smooth and enjoyable.

Here’s why:

We collaborate with charming family businesses and small food vendors who simply can’t handle a crowd of 20 all at once. Think of it like this: you wouldn’t want to be elbow-to-elbow with a dozen other foodies while trying to savor that delectable Dutch cheese, right?

By booking a time slot, we try to ensure that each stop is a pleasant, uncrowded experience for you and the local vendors. Of course, if you’re tempted to start earlier or later, just know that it might be a bit busier than your scheduled time.

In this day and age, you can easily share it with your entire clan with a simple click. But do us a favor. We’re an independent local business, just like the ones that you’ll support during this experience. Be a pal. Traveling in a group? We have a sweet deal for 2/3 persons or more. The more people buy, the bigger discount you get. Don’t be cheeky, simply get a family discount.

You absolutely need data to get around. Every stop comes with Google Maps directions, so you can navigate your way around easily. And make sure your phone is all charged and juiced up!

You’ll hit up around 6 – 8 foodie stops. All of them are beloved mom-and-pop shops, market stalls and one iconic brand that’s swept the nation by storm since 1941 — and you’ll meet the first family that ever franchised the brand.

The total walking time is a cool 10 minutes. Sure, you could zipline your way down the market and neighbourhood with your mouth wide open. But it’s a marathon, not a sprint. There are things to see, shops around you, plus reading the guide, devouring the stories, ordering and waiting time, etc. It’ll take you around 1,5 – 2 hours in total.

Even God needs a break, so no. Sometimes, our local food heroes go on vacation, just like the rest of us. Around 6 stops will always be open. But bear in mind that the opening times are subject to change.

Vegetarians, rejoice! We have veggie options for all stops except for two (fish and meat). However, vegans and those who are gluten-free – we’re sorry. This country runs on butter, eggs, and gluten.

It’s exclusively in English.

We recommend doing everything in one day to get the full experience. But if you’re full, we get it (it’s a lot of food).  So yes, you can continue on another day, if you’d like. But bear in mind that some stalls might be more crowded due to limited capacities. And check the opening times (subject to change) on your PDF guide before you go
